EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT SEMINAR – The Small Business Development Center at Daytona Beach College (DBC) is presenting "Employee Engagement,” a seminar from 9 a.m. - noon Tuesday, June 17 (registration and continental breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m.). The event will be led by Sam McPherson, president of Success Strategies, and Karl Haigler, president of Haigler Enterprises, and will be at the Mori Hosseini College of Hospitality Management at DBC, 1200 W. FARM TO FUEL SUMMIT This year's "Farm to Fuel" summit will be July 30 through Aug. 1 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort, Orlando. This initiative seeks to enhance the market for and promote the production and distribution of renewable energy from Florida-grown crops, agricultural wastes and residues and other biomass. Space is limited, so register by June 30. HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS Volusia County has the capability to utilize a telephone alert notification system in times of disaster for evacuation purposes. Citizens who would like to receive alert notification may log onto volusia.org or call (386) 254-4088 (Daytona Beach), (386) 736-5980 (DeLand), and (386) 423-3395 (New Smyrna Beach) to register. Residents with unlisted numbers, cell phones new phone numbers, or who reside in a mobile or manufactured home are encouraged to register. EXPORT TO PERU Enterprise Florida has announced an export sales mission to Lima, Peru October 19 through 22 and is seeking up to 25 companies interested in conducting two days of pre-screened, personalized business sales appointments with Peruvian companies. A breakfast with the U.S. Commercial Service in Peru and an ambassadorial cocktail reception are included. FILM AND ENTERTAINMENT GRANTS The Florida Governor's Office of Film and Entertainment announced it soon will begin accepting applications for the Florida Film, Television and Digital Media Incentive program. Applications will be accepted beginning June 23 for a slice of the $5 million of funding provided by the state. Applications for the different categories are available online at the www.floridainfilm.com.

SAVE WITH SOLAR – Rebate applications for the Florida Solar Energy Incentives Program can be found at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's web site, www.dep.state.fla.us/energy. To qualify, applicants must have a solar energy system installed by a licensed contractor and comply with local building codes. The application must be received by the state within 90 days of the system's purchase. To qualify for the federal energy investment tax credit, alternative energy systems must account for 50 percent of the energy usage of a residence or business. Solar water heaters, solar pool heaters and solar panels qualify for the incentive, which should be included in the owner's federal income tax return.

EXPORTING A MAJOR PART OF VOLUSIA’S ECONOMY – Based on a recent report issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, the value of products sold overseas in 2007 by businesses in Volusia County was $267,560,830. This represents an increase of $74,898,374 or 38.9 percent over the value of merchandise exported in the prior year. Over $120 million of Volusia's exports involved transportation equipment and computer/electronic products.
